Papers of the pastor (1924-66) of Charlotte's Little Church on the Lane (Moravian Episcopal), who was also a bishop of the Moravian Church in America and a leader in the Charlotte community. Includes correspondence (1921-78) relating to the church and to his denominational and civic activities, copies (1933-78) of his newspaper columns, and photographs. Consists predominantly of correspondence relating to Spaugh's positions as minister of the Little Church on the Lane and as bishop of the Moravian denomination. The collection also contains copies of his newspaper columns and correspondence concerning his role as a Charlotte community leader. There is little material documenting his long service as a member and chair of the Charlotte Board of School Commissioners.

Herbert Spaugh was born in Salem, N.C. on September 30, 1896. He graduated from Moravian College in 1916, received a B. Div. from Moravian Theological Seminary in 1924, and earned an M.A. from Davidson College in 1931. In 1920, he married Ida Brown Efird of Winston-Salem. The Moravians came to the United States in 1735 primarily to preach the gospel to the Indians. Although the Moravians had contacts with many Indian tribes, they did most of their work among the Delawares. They followed this tribe westward from Pennsylvania to Ohio, to Canada, to Indiana,and finally to Kansas.
